Pan Parlor!

Who can forget this legendary song from Teesri Kasam which gave a new meaning to eating Pan? It is still popular and people of that genre still love that song.

Pan Gumti

In Bihar, UP and Jharkhand, you will find a pan "gumti" in every "gali". It is a small 4' by 4' wooden shop selling pan. It has just enough space to sit inside along with all relevant belongings for making pan. When i came to Ahmedabad, for the first time i saw a Pan Parlor. I had only seen Beauty Parlor. So using "parlor" as suffix surprised me and i am still confused that how can a place selling pan be named as parlor. Parlor means a sitting room in a private house.

Most remarkable is that Pan Parlor or Pan House in Ahmedabad has a better brand value and it's bigger place selling lot of other stuffs. It's cleaner and fashionable. Instead of masala pan, meetha pan is more in demand. At night, Pan parlor becomes a place for social gathering. Friends can be seen exchanging their serious views on career, brokers discussing about stock markert in animated way, businessmen networking and strengthening their friendly relationship and young lads having fun and gossip mongering. Lot can happen at Pan Parlor in Ahmedabad. I remember my boss at Bajaj Allianz, used to conduct our daily team meeting at "Ghant" at Darpan Six Road, every night. That place was so happening that we all used to enjoy being there till late night. None of 6 managers ever complained.

One Pan Parlor which has become a landmark and is the most famous in Ahmedabad is not popular due to it's pan, but has a unique reason. We will soon talk about this in my next post.
